    Summer season is over for my Macropodus opercularis. This is how one of my two groups (the younger) look like, after they have spent couple of month in the garden. I´m proud of them! 🙂

    I have kept the “lover boys” together with a female and a third male as a separate group, in another tank, over the summer and indoor as well. I´m curious, if they still maintain their relationship. I´ll see it only in the next days/weeks, as observations outdoor were quite obstructed.

    I would rather say TL 11-12 cm = 7-8 cm SL

    Hi Matt,

    my M. opercularis also didn´t exceed 11-12 cm TL (SL 6-7 cm) and M. spechti stayed even 1 cm smaller.

    Hi!

    Some years ago some newts appeared in my small 1000 l biotope pond.

    Meanwhile they have also occupied some of the buckets in which I breed live food.

    Very rare I meet them even on the terrace, or in the garden.

    I wonder again and again, how fast S. petricola juveniles grow. Here some pics taken last week:

    While trying to count them, I found out that I still have 3 Microsynodontis sp nigeria. I´m 100% sure that I bought 5 of them, 3 died off this year and I still have at least 3??? Hm.
    Besides I´m almost sure there are more then 5 young S. petricola.

    Last week I added 7 P. rosy juveniles from a small breeding tank (there were totaly 13). They needed less than 1 hour to accommodate and it´s funny to see them swim fearless all over the tank,

    Hi Matt,

    hope you had beautiful holidays.

    It´s not easy to count the juveniles, but there should be at least 5 of them, probably from 2 different breedings. 2 of them are a little bit smaller, I see them often together and only in the right side of the tank. The bigger juveniles inhabit the middle and left side of the tank. It sounds strange, but it looks like they have clear delimited territories. However, I have never seen the “bigger” in the right side, nor the “smaller” in the middle or left tank side.
    Anyhow, they grow incredible fast. Their TL is about 4 cm and they also changed their pattern, looking more like adult Synodontis now.  This means I will have to catch them and
    give them away quite soon. That will be a real challenge. If I can not get them with a trap, I have no idea how to do it.

    I`m not sure if all my Petruichthys females are P. rosy. One of them has a different pattern. However, they behave as a group. A few P. rosy offsprings grow in a breeding tank and will join the group soon.

    I´ll try to make some better pics of the Synodontis next days, but can not promis that I will succeed, as I´m not a patient photographer and Synodontis are difficult models

    Hi!

    In my opinion not only the fry, but also adult Sewellia don´t spend much of their time directly in the strong current and appreciate quieter areas too. My Sewellia tanks run with self made air operated mat filter (for efficient filtration and aeration) plus a suplementar pump, positioned about half tank height and the water flow oriented slightly downwards. The current in the tanks is moderate (upside) to strong (downside).
    I also noticed, Sewellia love to sit on high leaves, wood, or rocks and observe theier world from above.

    This is a view of my 80 x  50 x 30 cm Sewellia sp spotted tank, showing the air operated mat filter (it´s the lowest tank in a 3 sides freestanding 3 tanks rack):

    I care for the older S. sp. spotted since July 2011, without losses or problems. Until 2 years ago the S. spotted lived in a “classic” hillstream tank (100 x 40 x 40 cm, intake on one side, outflow on the other side) and I couldn´t see any difference in their behavior.


    I also have a small 60 l tank for Sewellia lineolata
    which is following the same filtration and flow principles, just different design:

    I am not sure if they are A. pictilis, because of some differences.
    In A. pictilis there is no description of a sexual dichromatism. The loach with the reddish pigmentation on my pic always had&has that pigmentation (male), while the other loach never had the slightest red pigmentation (probable female).

    Unfortunately the pics showing my loaches short time after purchasing aren´t very good, still you can recon the reddish coloration present only in one of the two loaches.

    Meantime my loaches should be at least 2 years old and are still very peaceful to each other, no agressions at all.
    Their TL ist about 6,5 cm (presumed female) and max. 7 cm (male) now. 
    The pattern looks a little bit different, then in A. pictilis.

    Copied the thread to a facebook group on african catfish. First answer: hybrid of multipunctatus x eupterus. Which is definetily unnatural…

    Thanks Martin. I have just found the site of an american fish farm, showing several Synodontis hybrids. I never knew there are so many.
