you’re right… Only judging from the pictures on the website, the P. Brevis has always a discontinuous lateral line of black spots. Mine all have a continuous line, therefore more similar to P. Rosy. However I took a look at the bibliography that you provide (Kottelat 2012 and Kottelat and Chu 1998) in both papers the males are said to have spots that can actually merge in a continuous line. So… yes, they are probably a male-only group of P. Brevis. :-(

    Thanks a lot!

I have very bad news, I had moved my Salaria group outside for the winter break around 1 month ago in a large tank with gasterosteus aculeatus. Everything looked fine until yesterday, I found them all dead (not the stickleback, they are fine). Water temperature was oscillating in these days between 7 and 4 degrees. I have no idea of what happened. RIPConfused

thanks a lot!!! At present I am struggling against Ichthyophthirius infestation brought in by a pair of rhodeus sericeus in the tank. The water is all blue/green. As soon as I get back to nrmality I’ll post some pictures. Thanks again for the links and info!

Hi Charles, apologies for the late reply but all of a sudden internet explorer stopped opening the SF website (it says error 500 or something like that). I took me a month to realize that it was the browser’s problem rather than the website’s. So here I am. The Salaria are thriving in the indoor setup (22°C – tapwater). I was wondering how you got yours to spawn. Do they require a cold winter break to start spawning season? Also, what size were your sexually mature adults? Frome the pics they look larger than mine, which are 6-7 cm in length.

@torso: I am trying to raise some wild salaria fluviatilis collected in the Lago di Garda and was very curious about the link to the pdf that you posted, saying it contained more info. The link does not seem to exist any longer, could you re-post it please? Thanks a lot!!

Hi Stefan, got it from my local shop in italy, no idea of the distributor. I got 3 couples of these and they all look very similar with the argyle pattern. Waiting for spawning, but for the moment only a great deal of sparring between males. Thanks a lot for the answer!!

I’m starting to think this might sadly turn out to be a hybrid….
