    hello, I’m not a specialist but in France we have one key of the genus Betta ( an english version is also available in CIL-IBSC).
    With this key and with this only one picture (the doubts are on the presence or absence of iridescent opercles scales, green or blue…) I find that the fish belong in 3 groups:
    – akarensis
    – bellica
    – pugnax
    I’ve test the key for these 3 groups and it appears, for me that the fish in the picture is closely related to akarensis group (if he haven’t iridescent scales on opercles) and if he have iridescent scales on opercles he look like very similar to a B. pugnax variant.

    I’ll try to post an extract of the english version of the key for the akarensis group for you can compare your fish with the akarensis group key.
