AmyParticipantSilghtly continued from this thread first fishies and tank July 22ndI left my fish before I went on holiday, and I was saying bye to them one that I thought was a girl started to swin around another girl and flare, now I’ve got home a week later to lots of bubbles and 2 flaring males one with a nip in his back tail, i think the other 2 are girls they have a white dot under them i think malti told me to look for it. They’ve been fed and watered. The boys flare at each other and at the girls.
How would I know if the bubbles are going to turn into baby fish, and will I have to get rid of one or two of them incase they get more aggressive at each other. I’ll try and get some new pictures of them up soon.September 1, 2008 at 7:13 pm #309141

AmyParticipantAlreet Amy! How was it being cooped up with the boy for a week? <img src="style_emoticons//laugh.gif” style=”vertical-align:middle” emoid=”” border=”0″ alt=”laugh.gif” /> Is one male aggressively defending the nest? You should be able to see the eggs pretty clearly if there are any too. Will try to find a pic hang on.It was good, I even got him on a boat yesterday, it went to aquarium bay and apparently i was swimming above some fish but I couldnt see them until i got back on the boat then the last stop was at a nice little bay I managed to swim back with a little stone for my tank but there was loads prettier than bednall.
I needed to do a waterchange so i destroyedsome of the bubbles but managed to leave a few under some leaves and at the edge, they weren’t guarding them i think dunc will get to see them tomorrow or another day. thanks, what you been up to?

MattKeymasterNot the best pic but can you see the eggs here? Most are clustered towards the bottom of the frame. They’re solid white unlike the bubbles:

just found my camera lead, so I can try and get some pics and some holiday ones on my computer now.
most of the bubbles that are lefy are under a floating leaf so it its hard to see untill it floats near the front of the tank.September 1, 2008 at 7:43 pm #309153
MattKeymasterIf the nest has broken up there probably won’t be any chuck. Keep an eye on the less-dominant male as you might need to remove him and maybe one of the females at some point if you want to breed them. Pics would be good.

MaltiParticipantI’d suggest taking out the males, keep them in a 1 gallon jar, with alternating day waterchange (75%) – unless temp is too cold shouldn’t be a prob…and betta eggs look like white fullstops….
also for spawning you need a smaller tank

duncKeymasterI’m not convinced it’s two males. There was zero aggression between them today when I was round.
If there were two males.. wouldn’t they be literally kicking the crap out of each other by now? Especially considering they’ve been in there a month…
One of them is certainly a male. His finnage is muuuuch longer and he has all-over body colouration rather than just brightly coloured fins.
If it does turn out to be two males, I’ll find a new home for the second male or give him to my LFS. Not a fan of keeping Betta in such small containers unless it’s a temporary, very short term solution.
Why would she need a smaller tank to breed them btw Malti?

MattKeymasterDepends, some of the hybridised jobs that are floating about are less aggressive than the ones bred for fighting. Could well be though mate. I don´t think you need a smaller tank for breeding, incidentally.

duncKeymasterI must admit I’ve never heard of smaller tanks [especially smaller than Amy’s miniscule little thing] being mandatory for breeding splendens.
Matt will there be any chasing/flaring between females? Amy reckons this “second male” was flaring yesterday.

MattKeymasterYeah females can be aggressive towards each other too. Are there plenty of hiding places in there?
September 2, 2008 at 2:05 pm #309244
duncKeymasterYeah she’s got some of the rocks I ninja’d from Beadnell, and a good few silk plants.. plus the bogwood and red terracotta pot.
They seem to coexist peacefully. Their fins are in good shape.

as Matt said, domestic splendens are not all aggresive, infact for fighting purposes (where it is allowed, and I’m totally against it) they “hybridize” with the wild ones ie to get for example a CT fighter. and a 1 gallon tank/jar for a male is not bad, although you need water changing. Also there’s a type of short finned betta called a Plakat – some males may not be so brightly coloured.
well we breed them in a smaller tank cause of the male, easier for him to pick eggs/fry up, after 3 days you remove the male, then after roughly two weeks you transfer to a bigger tank.
water quality wouldn’t really affect them I guess ie on aggression.
Also if you want to try for fry in that HUGE tank (
