Is it possible to accept more than one answer to a question in the Q & A section?

I believe that it is quite justified to do so in some situations.

No, I’m afraid not. If an answer doesn’t include the *whole* answer, it generally shouldn’t be accepted.

The format, as seen on stackexchange.com, is supposed to be very strict. We’re not quite that strict but multiple accepted answers may be somewhat confusing.

I can understand that the system underlying the website has constraints, limiting how things are done and you have to deal with that, but philosophically I would have to disagree that there is only one correct answer to a question.

I would consider my recent question (about how to treat plants to eliminate things like snails) an example of one that could easily have more than one answer.

Another might be how to start up a biofilter or how to do a particular mathematical calculation. In some circumstances there can be many paths to a successful final result.

Some may be more efficient or better in one one way or another allowing one to be favored, but this may not always be the case.

Perhaps I am misunderstanding the purpose of the Q&A section. If it is to provide non-confusing simple answers (perhaps for beginners) than a single answer would make sense. Personally I enjoy looking at a diversity to answers, sorting through things, and perhaps coming up with my own solution pieced together from the variety of things presented. Of course, I can still do this regardless of what is labeled the correct answer. So, no big deal.

I guess I felt bad about awarding answering points to person A at the expense of person B.

    Hi Bill,

I see it exactly the way you do! And it doesn’t bother me at all that Charles got the green tick this time around! :-D

To me it’s all about an exchange of experience and knowledge and not about points. If you can “destill” anything from my answers and mix it up with somebody elses and your own, that’s good enough for me! ;-)

    Regards

    R.
