Hi, was gutted to find this out! It’s one of the reasons I was glad to get away from local government funded conservation work last year!

I’m confident that if we collectively put our heads together that we should be able to find a way to keep the project going, even if on a smaller scale or at a new locality. Obviously access is a current problem but there must be a way to appease this? Is there anyone that will be caring for the fish until this current lot is released?

Thanks you two. Colin, we’re waiting to hear about that. There should be an estimated 30-40,000 fish still in the swimming pools and there’s no-one on the park staff with much interest so we’ve asked what their plan is.

I think that at this location the project is finished – the email we received was pretty final in style and there was zero warning or prior discussion. I don wonder if this is linked to the proposed super casino build in some way since all related projects (amphibians, turtles, aquatic plants) have also been terminated…

    What’s the latest Matt?

Latest is that we’ve been told the project can continue provided we organise external funding Jim, so in September that’s the possibility we’ll be investigating. We need more people to help out as well so hoping we can unearth one or two volunteers. Don’t suppose you fancy being PR officer do ya??? 😀

Saludos cordiales. He estado siguiendo la discusión sobre este proyecto, me parece genial, es una pena vivir tan lejos de vosotros y no poder colaborar, de todas formas ánimo con el proyecto, el delta de Llobregat se merece que esto funcione bien.

    Un abrazo

You wouldn’t want that Matt. I’m a grumpy old fart! PR is not my strong point.

Looks like you may have found a volunteer though?

Yeah I hear what you’re saying about pr hence the reason we’re looking! 😀 The chap above is saying he lives far away from here and it’s a shame we can’t collaborate so reckon the search goes on…

Well we’re still, er, afloat for want of a better word. This year’s fish release takes place Sunday 28th and here’s some promotional info (in Catalan) about it. Anyone fancy the trip? Very nice bbq in a little Peruvian restaurant after! 😀

    Basic translation:

THE FARTET OF THE LLOBREGAT RIVER DELTA

Sunday the 28th October at ‘Torre de la Bunyola’

The fartet is a small fish that was on the point of extinction in the delta. To help its recuperation we have established self-sustaining populations in different parts of the Llobregat delta. Join us to release over a thousand specimens. Everyone is welcome to participate!

Place: Torre de la Bunyola, 20 minutes walking from the information centre of the Nature Park.

Time: 11.30 until 13h / Free activity / No need to enrol beforehand

    Itinerary of the event:
    – explanatory talk about the fartet, its habitat and why it almost disappeared from the park
    – short walk to the lagoon at ca l’Arana beach
    – release the fartet
    – end the event back at the Torre de Bunyola

Cheers Jim! Here are a few photos from Saturday morning. Weather has been very bad all weekend but Roberto has a weather station and predicted a window of a couple of hours so we removed as many fish as we could and placed them in the smaller pools where they’ll stay until next Sunday when we’ll count then release them at the chosen site.

Pics are by Enrique as I didn’t take my camera on this occasion.
