Fighting Fish

hi.

I just need some help. Im thinking about buying a fighting fish. witch tank would it be best in:

206Liter tank, with angelfish, a ghostfish , platty

100Liter tank with many small fishes like guppy, neon tetras, ect.

Hey Ross. I think there are potential problems keeping a fighter in either of those set-ups, to be honest. Fighters tend to resent any other fish with a similar body shape or long fins, and I’ve seen them attack both angels and guppies in the past.

Actually I’m not a massive fan of keeping fighters in communities in general. These are very sedate, slow-moving fish and are easily outcompeted for food. They are also not fond of the flow from power filters and suchlike. Just my opinion.

I wouldn’t put a Betta in either of those tanks personally. If you really want one i would set up another tank.

hi again. we aquired a 30l tank from someone my girl works with so ive put the male in there. at the minute the 2 females we have are in the 110l community tank with the guppies and such. should i put the females with the male or keep them seperate? i have been told only put them together when i want to breed them. the females are a lot smaller than the male at the min ( approx 25mm long ) how bjg can the females get and when do they become fertile? what would be the best tank setup? at the min im trying to plant the tank with some tall plants to shade it a bit and it also has an ornament for them to swim into. it has a slow small filter in there and also the temp is set to 27’c – 28’c. please let me know what you think.

also quickly my 206l tank, the light has started strobeing. its only very slightly but will this disturb the fish? i have a black ghost and he is already shy. will this upset him much? i have a black light in there also which i use before lights on and lights off. should i replace the light which is strobing or leave it for time being?

Hi Ross,

My opinion:

If you’re wanting to breed the Bettas then yes, keep the females separately for now. I didn’t realise you had a group. The girls can grow to around 6cm excluding the tail, so yours have a bit to go yet. I should also add that female fighters usually fare much better in the community tank than males because they are far less aggressive, and lack the finnage that makes males so enticing to fin-nipping species. They should be fine with your tetras and guppies, for example.

As for the tank set-up, are you referring to a specific tank for fighters? If so I’d recommend getting some floating vegetation in there as soon as possible. Salvinia should be readily available in Norway and is ideal. The tank should also be quite airtight and develop condensation if the project is to be successful.

The strobing light will undoubtedly get on your t*ts as much as it will the fishes. Therein lies your answer.

Totally agree with Matt but would also add that you really want i nice gentle filter as fighters don’t like being blown across the tank in the jet.
