FishwifeParticipantI’ve recently bought a Fluval Chi tank, and am delighted with it. At the moment I’ve got 3 Platies in and they’re using all areas of the tank but don’t appear to have a lot of room, so I was thinking that once its really mature, (it’s only just cycled) I’d try something smaller in there, the size of the tank is 10 x 10 x 16ins high and although the tank is 25 litres, there is actually only 21 litres in it.
So, I was wondering what small fish would use all the tank, would Microrasbora or Boraras be OK or even Ember Tetras. With the tank being so tall, I would like all areas covered.

BullyParticipantWith those dimensions, the only livestock I would be happy putting in there are shrimp.

FishwifeParticipantShrimps aren’t really an option, the Fluval Chi is an open top tank with a fountain effect filter at the top, the water level is very high about half an inch from the rim, also the bottom of the filter box is under water so shrimps would be able to climb onto and into the fountain area.
Fluval designed this tank, I’ve bought it, surely there must be some fish suitable for it

MattKeymasterI kept a single Polycentropsis abbreviata in a tank with a similar footprint for a couple of years without problems. *shrugs* Like Bully says though it’s probably best not to put a group of active, schooling fishes like the ones you mention in such a small space unless it’s a temporary measure for breeding purposes.

BluedaveParticipantI had a small group of five Eyespot Rasbora (Brevibora dorsiocellata) in a tank smaller than that – no problems.

On a side note, I really hope that these tiny tanks don’t become fashionable as they’re not really suitable for fish.

BluedaveParticipanttoo late Jared – nano tanks are all the rage i’m afraid.

StefanMemberLast spring I have a bought a 20 litre Dennerle nano tank to house a very small group of Paedocypris carbunculus ( http://www.rmbr.nus.edu.sg/rbz/biblio/56/56rbz415-422.pdf ) and the tank dimensions are chosen especially for these fish (they perish in larger tanks). Other than that I indeed wouldn’t use such a small tank for anything other than shrimp or rearing fry.

JarcaveParticipantQUOTE (Bluedave @ Dec 28 2010, 07:29 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>too late Jared – nano tanks are all the rage i’m afraid.I know. I know they have been for a while, but most were bigger than the chi. What I really mean is, I hope we’re not beseiged with sub 20 litre nanos in the future.
Sign of the times I agree…
