MattKeymasterYeah that ammonia reading is weird, and the pH is higher than expected. Is the test kit a new one Richard?

keith565Participantjust taken a reading from water collected yesterday
ammonia 0
nitrate 0
nitrite 0
pH 5.5April 7, 2008 at 6:29 pm #304873
RichardParticipantRight, think I may have this sorted….. I am using an API test kit, instead of adding from bottles 1&2 before shaking, I was giving it a good shake between 1 & 2, just done another test, readings are
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 10
Ammonia 0
pH 6.8Think i will err on the side of caution & do another check before I add any to the tank.

keith565Participanthmm, ph still seems high for rain water. is there anything that might be pushing it up. perhaps get a test from a shop to confirm your results. i do this now and again as test kits can go ‘off’.
but still a good usable water, and with no buffer it will drop even further as it ages.
i did all my water changes with rain water yesterday.April 8, 2008 at 12:18 pm #304891
MattKeymasterIs the water running off something perhaps?

RichardParticipantBeen wondering about this high pH all day, then it came to me……… when I first installed the new water butt, it was blowing a gale, did’nt want the empty butt rolling aroud the garden, so I decided to weigh it down with something, guess what i used, Yep, water from the outside tap, & I’m almost positive I did not empty it out, DOH!!!!, that might explain a lot.
