Although I’ve no experience of the fungus on the bulb, personally I’d stick it in a glass of water for a day or so to see if it rubs off then put it in anyway.

I found the rubra is a slower grower than nymphaea stellata for example.

If the fungus is just on the surface then rub it off and put the bulb in your tank. Should start to see some sprouting in a couple or three weeks.

If the fungus has gotten into the bulb then its dead and your due a new one.

Lovely plants though, if you trim the leaves before they get to the surface the plant will put out loads of runners and become really bushy.

    Thank you very much!

It’s barely sprouted unfortunately. I am thinking of writing them back and sending them a picture of how poorly it is doing. It has grown a leaf and a root and that’s it :/ My other plants are doing wonderfully, so I am not thinking it’s because of my growing conditions.

Any suggestions for helping it along?

What lighting and ferts are you using? Are you using CO2?

If it’s got some foliage on it then you should be fine – they are fairly slow to get going, once they do though they take off.

Hows the bulb doing WaterRaven – has it gone wild yet or did you send it back?

    Hey BlueDave!

It finally started to grow, seemed to come out of the bulb entirely and I ended up taking the bulb out. It was no longer attached? It rooted into the substrate, but it was just a tiny thing. It grew very slowly and only a couple more leaves. This was months ago.

To my horror, yesterday, I looked and could not find it! It is completely gone! I have no idea what happened to it. I am totally bummed. I am not sure who the culprit was, but nothing I can do about it now.

I have a 25 gallon with a Zoo med Tropicsun light. I do not have CO2, but my substrate is flourite sand and I believe that’s it.

I am very new to this, as you can see, but I am learning as I go. Actually, any books you recommend?

If you had kept the bulb it may well have sprouted again!

Loads of books – i’m sure we’ve spoken about it before – i’ll see if I can find a link to the post – if not i’ll be back later with some titles!

Well, don’t I feel like the village idiot.

Ugh! I am kicking myself for listening to that LFS employee now

First rule of Fight club…. I mean fish keeping…. is NEVER listen to your LFS! Come and ask here first.

If your going to buy one as a begginer I would recommend the Peter Hiscock one. You can always buy the more advanced (and expensive) Kasselmann one later!

HAH! I loved Fight Club! I had a discussion with someone about that recently. I mentioned how I was making some investments and how it’s scary to think that your money is just a number on a computer screen… but if that information ever disappeared, say if some members of Fight Club blew up some stuff… how unfortunate that would be and she said, “Huh, I don’t remember that. Wasn’t Fight Club just about fighting?” /biggrin.gif” style=”vertical-align:middle” emoid=”:D” border=”0″ alt=”biggrin.gif” />

I have decided to get The Encyclopedia of Aquarium Plants to start with and, I thought I might show you the new rubra I got from the LFS!

I trimmed two leaves off and trimmed the roots a bit to encourage some new growth. At least, that’s what I do with non-aquatic plants when replanting and thought I should do with the new rubra, it was looking a bit rough. I could totally be wrong… so it’s a good thing I am ordering that book

Looking good – have you got a full tank shot for us? I like the look of your moss.

Oh, I’d love to give you a shot, but I am remodeling my tanks and moving plants around… it looks… barren. But I can get you a better photo of the erect moss if you’d like? I am just embarrassed as to how the tank looks right now, with the swords coming back and redesigning etc.
