About 50% and brought the temperature down to what it was in their old tank with new water. Their old tank was always just under 20c but this one, although starting at 19C is now holding steady at 22C, that’s the only thing I can see different and I’d hardly think that would make that much difference would it?

I’ll do a big water change when the nitrite drops a bit, I’ve been using the Waterlife system, BioMature and BacterLife, It’s been really long drawn out and I won’t use it again, but thought I’d give it a try

Not a lot, the tank (a Fluval Chi) has a waterfall effect at the top, so its quite choppy up there, but its quite a deep tank and I don’t think there’s much movement at the bottom.

I didn’t know about salt, I’ve got some aquarium salt I could put in. But I’m thinking of setting up a brackish tank, would Nerites be suitable for that?

Well they’re not dead, I had them both out this afternoon and when I put them back the second one shot up the glass, but since then he fell off and is still on his back

My problem is that I like small tanks

Shrimps aren’t really an option, the Fluval Chi is an open top tank with a fountain effect filter at the top, the water level is very high about half an inch from the rim, also the bottom of the filter box is under water so shrimps would be able to climb onto and into the fountain area.

Fluval designed this tank, I’ve bought it, surely there must be some fish suitable for it

I’m really pleased with the tank, size and dimensions are just great, and agree that in principle the filter seems a good idea, the problem is there are a lot of extra holes in the filter housing that can’t be blocked up and the water just drips through these, along with an extremely noisy pump it’s a bit ott.

Ideally an external filter would be best, but I’ve never had one and am very worried about the setting up of it as I’ve no one to help me. So I’ll carry on the way I am

Thanks for your imput, I’ll have a good think before deciding either way. Looking at the base it’s a lot bigger than I originally thought, so I may just stick with smallish gravel

Thanks for that, most interesting. I’ll have to do some re-calculating. According to that, my 50 litre was overstocked, but I had a Fluval U2 filter so it was really over-filtered and the fish certainly seem healthy enough

Thanks for the info it made interesting reading, the girl at the LFS told me that neither fish needed brackish water although the goby would benefit from it it wasn’t essential. I just thought it was sales talk, looks like she was right

It was the Butterfly Loaches that I’ve seen in the LFS, I thought they were such interesting little fish, but read they should be kept in a 2ft tank, the 35 litre is 40 x 28 x 33H cm. I was planning on a Hydor Koralia nano in the 50 litre tank, but don’t know if the 35 will be big enough for one of those as they may be a bit too powerful.

I think I’d probably be as well, to just stick with the Minnows, maybe getting a couple of Golden ones for a bit of contrast, what do you think?

Thanks Dave, I’ve changed my mind about sand and was wondering if I should go for the flora base or just go gravel and tabs. Would I need to add tabs to the flora base at a later date? Also how deep would I have to go? The tank is 12 x 12 x 12 ins so I could have quite a deep base.

Also where should I put the filter? Sorry if that’s a daft question, but I know plants like a bit of movement but Bettas don’t. I’m thinking of getting a Plakat, so he should be able to cope with a bit more flow than a long finned fish.

Thanks for replies, I’ll go for the 5kg, best to be safe than sorry
