Ichthyological terms, not general ones.

  • F1

Term used in the fields of genetics and selective breeding in reference to the first filial generation, i.e., hybrid offpsring, of a cross between two distinctly different parental lines. Often used in aquarium literature to refer to offspring of F0 parents whether of the same species or not.

  • hybrid

Organism resulting from a natural or artificial cross between genetically-unlike individuals.

  • filial

Of, relating to or being a generation or the series of generations following the parental (F0) generation.

  • chimaera

An organism, organ or body part containing genetic tissue of more than one type due to mutation, transplant, genetic engineering, etc.. Also spelled 'chimera'.

  • F2

Offspring of the second filial generation, resulting from a cross between F1 individuals. Future such generations are termed F3, F4, etc..

  • microsatellite

Section of DNA comprising very short nucleotide sequences repeated many times. Highly polymorphic and used as a marker to determine genetic diversity, identify important genetic traits, analyse relationships, etc..

  • nano aquarium

Small aquarium of arguable definition. Freshwater nano-aquaria are generally accepted to hold between 5-10 US gallons (4.16-8.32 UK gallons; 18.93-37.85 litres) whereas in the marine hobby any aquarium with a volume of 30 US gallons (24.98 UK gallons; 113.56 litres) is generally considered to be a nano-system. These definitions vary, however. Also known as a nano tank.

  • outcrossing

A cross between relatively unrelated individuals; the introduction of unrelated genetic material into a breeding line. Often used to raise or maintain genetic diversity.

  • RNA

Abbreviation for ribonucleic acid, a single-stranded, self-replicating genetic material comprised of a chain of nucleotides. Present in nearly all living organisms, and replaces and performs the role of DNA in some viruses. Particularly important in protein synthesis and sometimes in transmission of genetic information.

  • acriflavine

An antiseptic used to treat external fungal plus general bacterial and protozoan infections in ornamental fishes and disinfect fish eggs in aquaculture. Also known as Acriflavinium chloride, ie., the chemical compound from which it is formed.

  • altruism

Behaviour benefitting other individuals of the same species, whether or not they are the offspring of the individual concerned. Frequently detrimental to the individual but favouring the spread or survival of its genes.

  • amphibian

A class of cold-blooded vertebrates, generally requiring water for reproduction.

  • asexual reproduction

Mode of reproduction which does not involve fertilisation whereby offspring derive from a single parent and inherit genes only from that parent. Known in the Amazon Molly, Poecilia formosa, and some other fish species.

  • barb

In zoology, used to refer to a small spine projecting from a larger one; alternative name for spinule and, sometimes, barbel. Also used to refer to cyprinid fishes of the genera Barbus, Puntius, Systomus and related species.

  • bathypelagic

Of, relating to, or inhabiting the depths of the ocean, generally between 1000-4000 metres but the term is sometimes extended to include shallower zones.

  • binomial name

The two part name of a species used in zoological nomenclature comprising generic (for the genus) and specific (for the species) names which form the full scientific name when combined, e.g. Carassius auratus.

  • biodiversity

The number, variety, and genetic variation of organisms found within a specified geographic region, both within and between species and ecosystems. Often used as a measure of overall ecosystem health.

    Used in 16 profiles

  • biome

A major regional or global biotic community normally characterised by the dominant vegetation and local climatic conditions, e.g., deserts, tropical rainforests, tundra. The two major aquatic biomes are freshwater and marine but these are often broken down into less-generalised categories.

  • breeding cycle

In fishes, the period of time between hatching and first spawning within a particular generataion.

  • breeding trap

Net or plastic container suspended or floated in an aquarium and used to isolate gravid female livebearers or fry collected from the main aquarium. Available in a number of designs, with plastic ones generally containing two compartments separated by a grille or opening large enough that fry, but not adults, can pass through.
