Ichthyological terms, not general ones.

  • elasmoid scale

Common scale-type. Found in all teleosts, and often separated into cycloid and ctenoid forms.

  • fluidised bed filter

Type of biological filter comprising a vertical column within which sand or other fine-grained filter medium is held in suspension, i.e., a fluidised state, by a continual upward flow of water. The many fine grains of filter media provide a huge surface area for bacterial colonisation.

  • gill net

Type of net normally suspended vertically in such a way that fish become ensnared by their gills.

  • hang on back filter

Small, motor-driven, type of external filter that literally hangs over the edge of the aquarium. Unsuitable for larger aquaria and often abbreviated to HOB or HOT (hang on tank).

  • heater

Thermostatically-controlled device used to maintain constant water temperature in an aquarium or pond, also known as a heaterstat. Depending on design, may be installed submersed within the aquarium, sump or substrate (see heating cable) or inline with tubing attached to an external filter. Some types of the latter also have a heating element built in.

  • igapó

Type of seasonally-inundated floodplain forest in the Amazon region. The term is normally used for those forests flooded by blackwater rivers.

  • leucism

Condition in which all types of skin pigment are reduced due to defects in pigment cell differentiation with the normal result a partially (often referred to as 'pied' or 'piebald'), or more rarely, completely white animal. Differs from albinism, which is caused by a lack of melanin only, in several ways, with one of the most apparent being that albino animals typically have red eyes whereas leucism does not normally affect eye colour. Pronounced, and sometimes spelled, leukism.

  • live sand

Type of substrate mostly used in marine aquaria collected directly from natural marine habiats and packaged in such a way as to maintain the resident microorganisms. Significantly reduces the time required to mature a new aquarium.

  • mechanical filtration

Type of filtration that physically removes solid particles and objects from the water.

  • morichal

Type of lowland stream found in South American savannas with riparian forest dominated by the moriche palm (Mauritia flexuosa). Often subject to seasonal flooding.

  • nominal taxon

A nomenclatural concept denoted by an available name used in an original description, and based, actually or potentially, upon its name-bearing type but having no defined taxonomic boundaries. Often used when the precise definition of a species or genus is unclear, such as when a name may refer to more than one taxon and is therefore in need of clarification.

  • nominotypical taxon

Nominal, subordinate taxon within a family, genus, or species group that contains the name-bearing type taxon within that group that has been divided.

  • paludarium

Type of vivarium with both aquatic and terrestrial areas.

  • pea gravel

Gravel-type consisting of small, rounded grains. Commonly-used as a substrate in aquaria.

  • peat swamp forest

Type of tropical moist forest lying over a thick bed of acidic peat, over 60% of which occur in Indonesia and Malaysia. Typically contain water with very low pH (<4.0) that is stained brown due to the release of various organic compounds from the decaying peat and thus often referred to as blackwater swamps. Usually contain some permanent water but also flood seasonally. Highly biodiverse when in pristine condition, with many species found nowhere else on earth, though increasingly subjected to intensive drainage, burning and subsequent conversion to agriculture in recent decades.

  • pecking order

Type of social hierarchy in which individuals within a given group or population are ranked by behavioural and/or physical dominance. Sometimes referred to as a dominance hierarchy.

  • placoid scale

Tooth-shaped scale-type found in certain fishes, e.g., sharks, rays. Structurally homologous with vertebrate teeth.

  • polymorphism

The occurrence of different forms, stages, or types in individuals or multiple organisms of the same species independent of sexual variation.

  • polyp

One of two types of body form occurring in coelenterates, comprising a hollow cylindrical body with a ring of tentacles around the mouth.
