  • river tank manifold

Home-made device used to achieve uni-directional flow in an aquarium when inhabitants naturally occur in high-velocity rivers and streams. Typically, one or more powerheads are located at one end of the aquarium with intakes at the opposite end, these being connected via pipework located under the substrate. Though certainly beneficial, this should not be considered an essential requirement in hill stream-type set-ups, however.

  • sibling species

One of two or more very closely-related species that are reproductively isolated from one another but almost indistinguishable in morphologically and/or behaviourally. May occur sympatrically and even interbreed but are incapable of producing fertile hybrid offspring. Sometimes referred to as cryptic species.

  • spawning migration

Migration of fishes to a spawning site or area, occurring in certain fishes. Variable in extent.

    Used in 10 profiles

  • species flock

Diverse group of closely-related, biologically distinct species occurring in an isolated area.

  • strip

To artificially remove gametes from for captive breeding; to forcefully remove eggs or fry from the buccal cavity of a mouthbrooding fish in order to hatch/raise them elsewhere.

  • sympatric

Occurring within the same, specified geographical area, but without interbreeding and not necessarily competing for the same resources or dwelling in the same habitat. Opposite of allopatric.

    Used in 195 profiles

  • syntopic

Occupying the same habitat within a specified geographical area, and sometimes competing for resources as a result.

    Used in 18 profiles

  • territory

In biology, area occupied by an individual, pair or group of animals and often physically defended against others of the same sex or species. May be established on a permanent or temporary basis.

  • topotypical

Occurring at, of, or relating to the type locality of a given species.

  • total length

Straight line measurement of specimen's length taken from the tip of the snout to the tip of the longer lobe of the caudal fin, if applicable, and not taking the curve of the body into account. If the caudal lobes are of equal length they may be compressed along the midline before the measurement is taken. Abbreviated to TL.

  • wet/dry filter

Type of filter normally placed under the aquarium, and often home-made. The basic premise is that water trickles vertically downards through separated compartments containing mechanical and biological filter media with spaces inbetween so that it is also exposed to the air briefly. It then collects in a base chamber or sump from where it is pumped back to the main aquarium. There are many commercial designs available, some of which are more effective than others. Not popular in marine reef aquaria due to the associated accumulation of nitrates as by-product.

  • xanthic

Having a yellow or golden colour; a desirable and selectively-bred mutation in certain ornamental fishes but can also occur naturally.

  • xanthochromic

Of a yellow or golden colour; a desirable and selectively-bred mutation in certain ornamental fishes but can also occur naturally.

  • yolk sac larva

Post-hatching larval stage occurring in many fish species whereby the yolk sac remains attached to the ventral surface for a period. The larva does not feed normally until the yolk is fully-absorbed.
