tankbuster

Vernacular term applied to fish species which grow to large for the vast majority of home aquaria. Most commonly appear in the trade at a small, and therefore more saleable, size.

An aquarium set up and maintained for purposes of quarantine. May also be used to isolate diseased, parasite-infested or otherwise unwell individuals, in which case it may be referred to as a hospital tank.

river tank manifold

Home-made device used to achieve uni-directional flow in an aquarium when inhabitants naturally occur in high-velocity rivers and streams. Typically, one or more powerheads are located at one end of the aquarium with intakes at the opposite end, these being connected via pipework located under the substrate. Though certainly beneficial, this should not be considered an essential requirement in hill stream-type set-ups, however.

activated carbon

Processed, porous, highly adsorptive form of carbon also known as activated charcoal or active carbon. Used in aquaria to remove toxins such as chlorine, chloramine, some heavy metals, and especially organic molecules, but exerts no action on ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate or inorganic salts. Since it has a finite surface area it requires periodic replacement if employed long-term, and should be removed if a tank is being treated as it will remove most medications. Cannot be 'recharged' by heating in a microwave or domestic oven.

external filter

A filter located outside the aquarium, typically holding larger amounts of media than an internal filter and used for larger tanks. Also known as a canister filter.

hang on back filter

Small, motor-driven, type of external filter that literally hangs over the edge of the aquarium. Unsuitable for larger aquaria and often abbreviated to HOB or HOT (hang on tank).

internal filter

A filter located inside the aquarium and typically used for smaller tanks due to its reduced capcity for media compared to external filters.

nano aquarium

Small aquarium of arguable definition. Freshwater nano-aquaria are generally accepted to hold between 5-10 US gallons (4.16-8.32 UK gallons; 18.93-37.85 litres) whereas in the marine hobby any aquarium with a volume of 30 US gallons (24.98 UK gallons; 113.56 litres) is generally considered to be a nano-system.
