Type locality is the 'river below Calcutta' which corresponds to the western side of the Ganges River delta south of Kolkata, West Bengal state, with reports as to its wider distribution varying significantly. It's sometimes said to be present throughout India plus both mainland and maritime southeast Asia, but is more likely restricted to India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and possibly Myanmar.

Known only from a handful of streams in the upper Mali Hka river drainage, Ayeyarwaddy River system, near Putao township in the far north of Kachin state, northern Myanmar. Type locality is 'Nan Hto Chaung in Putao, about 1 mile from 46th regiment, close to rice mill'.

Although it does penetrate the lower basins of rivers, particularly the Amazon where it has been collected from the rio Xingu several hundred kilometres from its mouth, this species is predominantly an inhabitant of mangrove swamps, estuaries, and other such saline habitats. It is particularly common in tidal channels, shallow inshore lagoons, and the lower reaches of rivers.

Known from the middle and upper Amazon river basins in Brazil, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia. Type locality is 'Amazon River at Obidos, Cudajas, and Tabatinga; Rio Negro, Brazil.' It apparently practises an interesting reproductive strategy in which the eggs are deposited in a shallow depression excavated from the substrate and guarded by the male.

This species' range is unclear with collection records scarce, although it certainly occurs in the 'Tres Fronteras' region of the western Amazon river basin where the borders of Brazil, Colombia, and Peru meet. Type locality is 'Lakes of the Isla de Mocagua, Amazon River, near Leticia, Comisaría del Amazonas, 3°54'S, 70°14'W, Colombia'.

Native to Guyana, where it may be restricted to the Potaro River, a major tributary within the Essequibo watershed. It was described from aquarium specimens which were said to have been collected in 'very small water courses of the Amazon', but the type locality was corrected to 'Guyana-Essequibo, Potaro River, Kuribong trail' by Nijssen and Isbrücker (1980).

Type locality is 'Tenasserim, Myanmar' which at time of description was used to refer to the portion of Myanmar lying to the south and east of the Ayeyarwaddy/Irrawaddy river delta, including present-day Kayah, Kayin, and Mon states, Bago Division, and possibly the southern Tanintharyi Region. Appears to have a disjunct range with records from Pahang state in central Peninsular Malaysia, plus the Mae Klong and Chao Phraya river systems in Thailand, but it has not been recorded in Peninsular Thailand. Type locality is 'Pahang River, Kuala Tembeling, eastern slope of Sangka Dua Pass, Malaysia, elevation about 2000 feet'.

Native to the Mekong river system in Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia, including the Tonlé Sap basin. Type locality is 'Kemarat, Thailand', which corresponds to the Mekoong River in Khemmarat district, Ubon Ratchathani province, northeastern Thailand.

Known only from headwaters of the Sungai (river) Amandit, a tributary of the larger Barito basin in the Meratus mountain range, Kalimantan Selatan (South Kalimantan) province, Indonesian Borneo. There currently exist 36 officially-described members of the genus, all of which are endemic to the island with over half restricted to a single river basin or sub-basin.

In a study conducted on the Arataye River, the main tributary of the Approuage, this species was mostly collected from stretches of rapids with rocky substrate which were reduced to a series of pools during the dry season. Other fishes observed at the same site were Auchenipterus nuchalis, Hypostomus gymnorhynchus and Moenkhausia cf. intermedia while at other localities in the river Bryconops affinis, Myleus ternetzi, M. rhomboidalis, Moenkhausia aff. barbouri, Curimata sp. and Serrasalmus sp. were collected.
