Corydoras davidsandsiSand's Cory
Black, 1987
Max length60mm SL2.4in SLTank90 × 30cm36 × 12inTemp20–28°C68–82°FpH5.0–7.0The type series was said to have been collected from a "whitewater area", but images of the rio Unini depict a blackwater system typical of the rio Negro basin, and this is supported by empirical evidence. There are sections of rapidly-flowing water so perhaps this is what the author was referring to. Habitats should therefore comprise tributaries and areas of flooded forest where the water is...

Corydoras delphax
Nijssen & Isbrücker, 1983
Max length60mm SL2.4in SLTank90 × 30cm36 × 12inTemp22–27°C72–81°FpH5.5–7.5Unfortunately, precise diagnostic characters cannot currently be provided since we’ve been unable to obtain the type description, and little has been Characters said to separate it from species such as C. ambiacus, C. agassizii, C. brevirostris, C. ephippifer, and C. melanistius include a combination of relatively elongated snout, dark spots on body fading in adults, dark anterior dorsal-fin patch extending to upper extremity of fin, and presence of spots in the caudal-fin.

Corydoras gomezi
Castro, 1986
Max length60mm SL2.4in SLTank90 × 30cm36 × 12inTemp20–26°C68–79°FpH6.0–7.5This species' range is unclear with collection records scarce, although it certainly occurs in the 'Tres Fronteras' region of the western Amazon river basin where the borders of Brazil, Colombia, and Peru meet. Type locality is 'Lakes of the Isla de Mocagua, Amazon River, near Leticia, Comisaría del Amazonas, 3°54'S, 70°14'W, Colombia'.

Corydoras griseus
Holly, 1940
Max length50mm SL2.0in SLTank90 × 30cm36 × 12inTemp20–26°C68–79°FpH6.0–7.5Native to Guyana, where it may be restricted to the Potaro River, a major tributary within the Essequibo watershed. It was described from aquarium specimens which were said to have been collected in 'very small water courses of the Amazon', but the type locality was corrected to 'Guyana-Essequibo, Potaro River, Kuribong trail' by Nijssen and Isbrücker (1980).

Corydoras haraldschultziMosaic Cory
Knaack, 1962
Max length85mm SL3.3in SLTank120 × 30cm48 × 12inTemp24–28°C75–82°FpH5.5–7.5The original type locality is 'Rio Guaporé, Brazil', supposedly in the vicinity of Pontes e Lacerda in Mato Grosso state. However, this was modified by Nijssen and Isbrücker (1980) to 'Brazil-Goias, Rio Tocantins, road between Pedro-Afonso (08°59'S 48°12'W) and Itacajá (08°18'S 47°45'W)'. This is confusing since the distance between these two localities is well over 1000 km, although it appears that the former is correct as per our image of specimens with locality details.

Corydoras imitatorImitator Cory
Nijssen & Isbrücker, 1983
Max length65mm SL2.6in SLTank90 × 30cm36 × 12inTemp20–26°C68–79°FpH4.0–7.0Endemic to the upper rio Negro basin in Amazonas state, northern Brazil, and Amazonas state, southern Venezuela. One specific locality is Igarapé Muiá (00°09'03"N 66°48'10"W). Type locality is 'Upper Rio Negro, eastern Amazonas, Brazil', which is thought to refer to forest brooks crossing the "new army road", north of São Gabriel da Cachoeira municipality.

Corydoras incolicanaC001
Burgess, 1993
Max length80mm SL3.1in SLTank120 × 30cm48 × 12inTemp20–26°C68–79°FpH4.0–7.0C. incolicana was the first recipient of a 'C' number (see below) in 1993 and was described the same year. Unfortunately its description was published in an aquarium hobbyist magazine, and we have been unable to obtain a copy to date meaning its diagnosis is unavailable. It is therefore difficult to identify accurately, not least because its type locality is in a relatively remote area, and there exist a number of superficially similar Corydoras species or populations in the aquarium trade.

Corydoras lacrimostigmata
Tencatt, Britto & Pavanelli, 2014
Max length34mm SL1.3in SLTank60 × 30cm24 × 12inTemp20–25°C68–77°FpHnot recordedKnown only from the rio Ivaí basin, a tributary of the rio Paraná in Paraná state, southern Brazil. Type locality is 'Brazil, Paraná, Cândido de Abreu, rio Maria Flora, tributary to rio Ubazinho, rio Ivaí basin...

Corydoras lambertiC009
Nijssen & Isbrücker, 1986
Max length55mm SL2.2in SLTank80 × 30cm31 × 12inTemp20–26°C68–79°FpH6.0–8.0Unfortunately diagnostic characters cannot be provided since we have been unable to obtain the type description to date, and little else has been written about this species. There is also confusion regarding whether C. lamberti, the unidentified 'C009', and similar-looking fish collected close to Iquitos are conspecific or not. We include all together here until these issues are resolved.

Corydoras virginiaeMiguelito Cory
Burgess, 1993
Max length60mm SL2.4in SLTanknot recordedTemp22–28°C72–82°FpH6.0–7.5This species is sometime referred to as 'Virginia's catfish', Corydoras sp. 'Sangama' or 'Zangama', and prior to description was misidentified as both Corydoras bicolor and C. delphax. Unfortunately additional diagnostic characters cannot be provided since we've been unable to obtain the type description, and little has been written about this species since it was published.

Corydoras zygatusBlack Band Cory
Eigenmann & Allen, 1942
Max length70mm SL2.8in SLTank90 × 30cm36 × 12inTemp20–26°C68–79°FpH5.5–7.5Known from the Ucayali (río Samiria), Huallaga, Santiago, and Pastaza (ríos Bobonaza and Pindo) river systems in eastern Ecuador and northern Peru. These are all tributary drainages within the middle Río Marañón watershed, a major affluent of the upper Amazon river basin. Type locality is 'Río Hallagua system, Yurimaguas...

Cyprinodon alvareziPotosí Pupfish
Miller, 1976
Max length60mm SL2.4in SLTank60 × 30cm24 × 12inTemp17–26°C63–79°FpH7.0–8.0The type locality originally consisted of a single spring-fed pond located in an endorheic basin known as 'La Hediondilla' at the foot of the 'Cerro Potosí' mountain and around 1880 m AMSL. It had been modified to make it larger via an earth and rock dam, and below the pond were several distributaries running for a distance of 1-1.5 km.

Cyprinodon pachycephalus
Minckley & Minckley, 1986
Max length45mm SL1.8in SLTank60 × 30cm24 × 12inTempnot recordedpHnot recordedNeed not be too complicated so long as there are plenty of broken lines-of-sight. Provide plenty of cover in the form of aquatic plants, wool mops, etc., and if using filtration air-powered, sponge-type units are best as these will not harm eggs or fry. Lighting is unimportant but can be use...

Dario kajal
Britz & Kullander, 2013
Max length20mm SL0.8in SLTank45 × 30cm18 × 12inTemp16–24°C61–75°FpH6.5–7.5This species was referred to as Dario sp. ‘Jaintia Hills’ or D. sp. ‘Bangladesh’ prior to its description. Type locality is 'India, Meghalaya, Jaintia Hills, Seinphoh stream at Umolong, 7 km from Jowai town, 25°31’36’’N 92°08’27’’E, 1320 m asl', and in India it has not been found elsewhere to date.

Dawkinsia exclamatio
Pethiyagoda & Kottelat, 2005
Max length100mm SL3.9in SLTank120 × 45cm48 × 18inTemp19–25°C66–77°FpH6.0–7.5There is a case, however, to suggest that D. exclamatio is not actually a distinct taxon but rather a natural hybrid between D. assimilis and a D. arulius-like fish (possibly D. rubrotinctus) which occur together at its type locality in the Kallada River at Thenmalai. The potential of hybridisation is evidenced by the somewhat intermediate colour pattern in that it possesses a (roughly) W-shaped mid-lateral blot...

Dawkinsia filamentosaFilament Barb
Valenciennes, 1844
Max length120mm SL5in SLTank120 × 45cm48 × 18inTemp20–25°C68–77°FpH6.0–7.0Not difficult to keep in a well-maintained set-up, though we recommend aquascaping the tank to resemble a flowing stream/river with a substrate of variably-sized, water-worn rocks, sand, fine gravel and perhaps some small boulders. This can be further furnished with driftwood roots or branches, and while the majority of aquatic plants will fail to thrive in such surroundings hardy types such as Microsorum, Bolbitis or Anubias spp. can be grown attached to the décor.

Dawkinsia rohani
Rema Devi, Indra & Knight, 2010
Max length95mm SL3.7in SLTank120 × 45cm48 × 18inTemp19–25°C66–77°FpH6.0–7.5Known only from Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu state, at the southern tip of the Indian peninsula. Type locality is the Kodayar River drainage and it's also been collected in the Paralayar and Pamburivaikal river systems. No precise data is available but it's certainly a pelagic, riverine species with habitats likely to vary depending on locality and time o...

Desmopuntius gemellus
Kottelat, 1996
Max length100mm SL3.9in SLTank120 × 45cm48 × 18inTemp22–25°C72–77°FpH4.0–7.0The type series was purchased from a market in Jambi province, eastern Sumatra, Indonesia and this species is also known from neighbouring Riau province plus the island province of Bangka. On Sumatra it may be restricted to the Indragiri and Batang Hari river systems. Inhabits peat swamp forests and associated black water streams in which the water is typically stained brown with humic acids and other chemicals released by decaying organic material. The dissolved mineral content is generally negligible and the pH can be as...

Desmopuntius hexazona'Pentazona' Barb
Weber & de Beaufort, 1912
Max length55mm SL2.2in SLTank80 × 30cm31 × 12inTemp20–26°C68–79°FpH4.0–7.0Native to parts of southern Borneo, eastern Sumatra, Singapore, and the Malay Peninsula. In Singapore it's considered highly-endangered and is now restricted to the Central Catchment nature reserve. Type locality is 'Tuluk and Gunung Sahilan, Sumatra, Indonesia' which appears to correspond to localities within the Kampar River drainage of which the former is now known as Teluk Meranti and is o...
