Despite its designation as type species this is among the most frequently-misidentified members of the genus. This is in part because its natural distribution was earlier considered even more extensive than the still-substantial range recognised today, with populations from the Río Orinoco, Guianas and rio Tocantins now recognised as species in their own right.

This species appears to be a relative ecological generalist. During a sampling trip in 1989 it was collected various habitat-types including a narrow (maximum width 3 m) stream containing shallow (maximum depth 1 m), transparent, moderate to fast-flowing water and substrate comprising gravel, mud, clay and organic debris including submerged logs. Aquatic plants consisted of water lilies and marginal vegetation was dense, comprising various trees, shrubs, grasses and ferns.

A densely-planted tank with floating vegetation and roots, twigs or branches and natural leaf litter would seem appropriate. Recorded from the middle to lower Mekong river basin in southern China (Yiunnan province), Laos, Thailand, and Cambodia, plus the Chao Phraya watershed in central Thailand. Type locality is 'Thailand: Lam Ton Lang, a tributary of Menam Sak [Mae Nam Pa Sak; Ban Lam Thong Lang, village northwest of Pakjong'.

This species has been recorded from the Zhujiang (Pearl River), Changjiang (Yangtze River) and Qiantang Jiang in central and southern China. Type locality is 'Chang Jiang, China', referring to the Yangtze. It's been adversely affected by dam construction and pollution across certain parts of its range and may be locally extirpated in some cases.

Endemic to the Korean peninsula where it occurs throughout North Korea and South Korea. Type locality is 'Keumsan River, near Pusan, South Korea.'

The water at the type locality is described as 'clear and fast-flowing over a rocky substratum'. H. parclitella was observed in shallow water among the rocks, and sympatric species included Garra cambodgiensis, Neolissochilus soroides, Poropuntius smedleyi, 'Puntius' binotatus, Homaloptera nebulosa and Amblyceps mangois.

Type locality is given as 'Lake Meninju, Sumatra, Indonesia', currently known as Danau (lake) Maninjau, but conceivably the fish may have been obtained from the outflowing Antokan river rather on its western side than the lake itself.

This species is known from the rio Negro within the Brazilan Amazon basin and upper Río Orinoco system in Venezuela. Type locality is 'Rio Adujá, Rio Itú, tributary of middle Rio Negro, Amazonia, Brazil'.

Widely-distributed throughout the Amazon, Orinoco, Essequibo, and Tocantins river systems in Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, and Guyana. Type locality is 'Rio Cupai [= Rio Cupari], Rio Tapajós basin, Amazon River drainage, Pará State, Brazil'.
