Known from Great Lakes Erie and Michigan with distribution extending south through the Mississippi River basin to the Gulf of Mexico drainages where it's said to occur between the lower Apalachicola River in Florida and the Nueces River in Texas. It may also be found in the Rio Grande which forms the border between Mexico and the United States further south where records include Falcon International Reservoir, for example.

Type locality is giev as 'Rio Parahyba and tributaries at Mendez; Juiz de Fora; River Doce; River São Matheos; Rio Jequitinhonha; Rio Quenda at Santa Cruz', all of which pertain to localities within the Paraíba do Sul and Doce river systems in Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, rio de Janeiro and São Paulo states, southeastern Brazil.

Described from Sichuan province, southwestern China (presumably the upper Yangzte River, aka Chang Jiang, drainage) and also known from parts of the Pearl River (Zhu Jiang) basin in Guangxi Autonomous Region. Described from 'Etok stream near Chanderkhong, southern watershed of the Naga Hills, Manipur, Assam', located within the Chindwin River basin in northern India. The Chindwin is the major tributary of the Ayeyarwady/Irrawaddy River and most of it flows within Myanmar although two of its own tributaries, the Manipur and Yu rivers, originate in the Indian states of Manipur and Nagaland.

Known only from the rio Uaupés system in Brazil with type locality 'brook emptying into Igarape Yavuari River, tributary of River Uaupés, upper Negro River basin, 0°14'31"N, 68°03'48"W, Amazonas, Brazil'. The full extent of its range is unclear but additional populations may exist.

Apparently endemic to the upper Yangtze River basin, China. Type locality is 'mountain-stream fiowing into the Ichang gorge of the Yangtsze River'.

Native to the Mekong River drainage in Laos (where Vientiane province represents the upper limit of its range), Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, and the Tapi, Chao Phraya, and Mae Klong systems in Thailand. Type locality is '22 kilometers upstream from Phnom Penh, Tonle Sap River, Kandal Province, Cambodia'.

This species is widely-distributed in lowland, coastal regions of Togo, Benin and Nigeria as far as the Cross River delta, and occurs at some inland localities along the lower Niger River. Populations in Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon are now considered to represent other species.

Type locality is close to a waterfall on the Ndian River in southwestern Cameroon, and appears restricted to the coastal plains either side of the border between Cameroon and Nigeria, including the Korup and Cross River National Parks.

The type material was derived from a commercial shipment of fishes from Leopoldville, now Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, and presumed to have been collected in the vicinity. The precise extent of its distribution unknown but appears extensive in the middle and lower Congo regions, with specimen collected from Lac Fwa (Sankuru River drainage, a Congo River tributary), many hundreds of kilometres west of Kinshasa, identified as belonging to this species.

Type locality is the settlement of Bessou, Lobaye prefecture, Central African Republic, which lies within the Ubangi (also spelled Oubangui) River basin. The Ubangi is a major tributary of the Congo River and this species appears restricted to its middle section and thus probably extends into northern Republic of Congo and Democratic Republic of Congo.

Described from northern Gabon, close to 'Zoumoukou', which is seeen on modern maps as 'Zomoko', but has a much wider distribution extending into Equatorial Guinea (upper parts of some Benito River tributaries), and southern Cameroon (Ntem River), as well as the Ivindo and Okano drainages in Gabon, the latter pair both tributaries of the much larger Ogooué system.

This fish has yet to appear in the aquatic trade and only been exported in extremely limited numbers to date. Specimens collected from the Wahumiam River close to the settlement of Shella Bholaganj by Peter Cottle and Andrew Rao in 2006 were initially considered an undescribed species and referred to as B. sp.'Wahumiam River' or B. sp. 'terracotta', but later found to match B. tuivaiei in terms of morphology, meristics, etc. (S. van der Voort, pers. comm.).

Known from the from the Red River in northern Vietnam and Yunnan province, southern China, plus the Thái Bình, Sông Kỳ Cùng, Mã and Lam rivers in Vietnam and possibly the Nam Xam and Nam Ma drainages in Laos. Type locality is 'Market in Hanoi, Vietnam'.

Known with certainty from the Irrawaddy River system in Manipur state, India, and Myanmar, and the Salween watershed in eastern Myanmar and northwestern Thailand. Presumed endemic to the geographically-isolated Maliau basin, a roughly circular plateau enclosed by hills in Sabah state, Malaysia, Borneo. The majority of records pertain to an area sandwiched between the lower Arut and Kumai rivers, south of the towns of Pangkalan Bun and Kumai in Kalimantan Tengah (Central Kalimantan) province, Borneo, Indonesia. Addditional collections have taken place in the Sampit river basin to the east, and several hundred kilometres further north in Sukadana district Kalimantan Barat (West Kalimantan) province. Type locality is 'Indonesia: Borneo: Kalimantan Tengah: Arut basin: Pankalanbun', with the specimens having been obtained from the aquarium trade.
