Known only from headwaters of the Sungai (river) Amandit, a tributary of the larger Barito basin in the Meratus mountain range, Kalimantan Selatan (South Kalimantan) province, Indonesian Borneo. There currently exist 36 officially-described members of the genus, all of which are endemic to the island with over half restricted to a single river basin or sub-basin.

Type locality is 'Tukeit, Guyana', and this species is known from various river drainages of Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana including the Orinoco, Essequibo, and upper Courantyne (aka Corantijn) basins. Additional records exist from the upper Amazon basin in Guyana, these presumably corresponding to the Takutu river basin, itself part of the upper rio Branco.

Native to the central Amazon basin with records existing from the Madeira, Branco, Trombetas, and Tapajós river drainages, plus the Rupununi basin in Guyana. Although an affluent of the rio Essequibo and thus not officially part of the Amazon basin, the latter is connected to the rio Takutu, a tributary of the upper rio Branco, during the annual wet season. Type locality is given by Fowler as 'Rio Madeira about 200 miles east of W. Long. 62°20', Brazil'.

Known with certainty from the Irrawaddy River system in Manipur state, India, and Myanmar, and the Salween watershed in eastern Myanmar and northwestern Thailand. Records from the Red River basin in Vietnam appear questionable. Type locality is 'Burma: Myitkyina District: Mali Hka basin: Phungin Hka;'.

The majority of records pertain to an area sandwiched between the lower Arut and Kumai rivers, south of the towns of Pangkalan Bun and Kumai in Kalimantan Tengah (Central Kalimantan) province, Borneo, Indonesia. Addditional collections have taken place in the Sampit river basin to the east, and several hundred kilometres further north in Sukadana district Kalimantan Barat (West Kalimantan) province. Type locality is 'Indonesia: Borneo: Kalimantan Tengah: Arut basin: Pankalanbun', with the specimens having been obtained from the aquarium trade.

Recorded throughout much of the Amazon basin, with its range extending eastwards from the Ucayali system in Peru as far as the Tocantins drainage which flows into the Atlantic alongside the Amazon at its delta. The southern extremity of its range appears to be the Río Mamoré in Bolivia, a tributary of the rio Guaporé, and the northern limit the Essequibo basin, Guyana.

Appears to be endemic to headwaters of the Salween River basin around the border between Myanmar and Thailand. The type specimens were collected from the Megathat Chaung (Megathat stream) in the upper Ataran (known as the Kasat in Thai) River basin, Kayin/Karen State, Myanmar and another population was later discovered in the Hanthayaw River (Suriya in Thai), Tak Province, Thailand.

Known only from the rio Ivaí basin, a tributary of the rio Paraná in Paraná state, southern Brazil. Type locality is 'Brazil, Paraná, Cândido de Abreu, rio Maria Flora, tributary to rio Ubazinho, rio Ivaí basin...

Endemic to Central Kalimantan (Kalimantan Tengah) province, Borneo, Indonesia although the full extent of its range remains somewhat unclear. Initial collections were from the southwestern tip of the province, in the Jelai Bila river basin near Sukamara and Lamand basin close to Pangkalan Bun, both of which are tributaries within the Arut drainage, while it's subsequently been recorded in the Benipah river system further east.

Known only from affluents within the upper rio Tocantins basin draining into the enormous Serra da Mesa hydroelectric reservoir in Goiás state, Brazil. It has been collected from the rios Maranhão, das Almas, Traíras, and Palmerinha/Palmeira(?). Type locality is 'Brazil, Goiás, Rio Tocantins basin, Rio das Almas, tributary of left margin of Rio Maranhão, 14˚37′51.2″S, 49˚1′56.6″W'.

R. vulpinus is the most widely-distributed member of the family Cynodontidae. Type locality is given simply as 'Brazilian rivers', but this species is currently understood to be distributed in the Amazon basin from the Río Ucayali system in Peru, eastward as far as the rio Xingu in Brazil, plus the rio Tocantins and Rio Capim basins. This species' distribution is unclear although individuals from the aquarium trade are said to have been collected in the Tenasserim river basin in Tananthayi Region, southern Myanmar. Type locality is 'supposedly from Tananthayi district, Tananthayi River basin, obtained dead from aquarium fish vendor at Meik'.

Native to continental China, the Korean peninsula, and southern Japan. Type locality is given only as 'Lakes and rivers, northern China', with the type series possibly originating from the Pai-ho River near Beijing. It has been widely introduced and is considered invasive elsewhere, including the Mekong river basin (records from Laos and Thailand), Salween river (Myanmar), northern Japan, Taiwan, Turkmeni...

Known only from the lower Amazon river basin, and possibly restricted to the Xingu and Tocantins watersheds. Type locality is ' Rio Santa Teresa, a western tributary of upper Rio Tocantins, Goiaz State, Brazil', referring to what is now known as Goiás state, central Brazil.

Apparently endemic to the upper Yangtze River basin, China. Type locality is 'mountain-stream fiowing into the Ichang gorge of the Yangtsze River'.

Described from a rainforest stream near the settlement of Mintoum, northern Gabon and has a wider distribution in the upper Ivindo River basin, a tributary of the larger Ogooué system. Thi species was considered synonymous with the congener A. herzogi Radda 1975 for a number of years but is currently recognised as distinct.

Described from a small stream in Mambanda, near Kumba, western Cameroon, and appears restricted to parts of the central Mungo River basin in that region.

Type locality is the settlement of Bessou, Lobaye prefecture, Central African Republic, which lies within the Ubangi (also spelled Oubangui) River basin. The Ubangi is a major tributary of the Congo River and this species appears restricted to its middle section and thus probably extends into northern Republic of Congo and Democratic Republic of Congo.

This species' currently accepted range stretches from eastern Nigeria (Mbam River) across central Cameroon (via the Sanaga River system of which the Mbam is a tributary) and across the border into Central African Republic (upper Mambéré basin). It was described from 'Jade Plateau, Cameroon', this apparently corresponding to the Lebo River which lies in what is now the Central African Republic and presumably forms part of the Mambéré headwaters.

Known only from the Batéké plateau region and surrounding area in southeastern Gabon where it's been recorded from the Léconi-Djouya and upper Mpassa rivers, these forming a portion of the much larger Ogooué basin. Type locality is '6 km west of Léconi', the latter presumably referring to the settlement of that name.
