Contribution guidelines

You need an account with a confirmed email address to send anything, and a moderator reads all of it before it appears on the website.

Species profiles

On a species profile you can change its facts, rewrite any of its writing, add or remove the countries, regions, rivers and lakes it is found in, propose a new scientific name, add a reference or report a mistake. You send everything you change on one profile together. The family a species is in can only be reported.

To add a species, enter its scientific name and a summary. That opens an empty profile, and you fill it in and send it in the same way.

Other pages

On a genus or family page you can change the writing and add a reference, and report the family a genus is in or the order a family is in. On a glossary entry, such as mulm (glossary), you can rewrite the definition and report a mistake in the term. An article is signed by the fishkeeper who wrote it, so you can report a mistake in one and a moderator will make the correction.

Sources

Anything you state as a fact needs a source we can check. A paper or a book is the clearest. Your own experience counts as well, as long as you say how many you kept, how long you kept them, and what you saw. What counts as a source has an example of each kind.

Community notes

A community note is your own experience of keeping a species, and it needs no source. It appears on the profile under the section it is about, with your name unless you have hidden it on your account page. A note about what a paper, a book or a website recorded about wild fish needs that source.

Photographs

You can send a photograph of a fish from its profile, or of a river or lake from its page. It has to be a photograph you took yourself, and you choose how it can be used. The fish has to be the subject, in focus and large in the frame, so a tank shot the species happens to be in will not be published. A river or lake page shows one photograph, and accepting yours replaces the one already there.

Figures in your writing

Use the two figure buttons in the toolbar for any measurement in your writing.

⌗ Field inserts a figure the profile records: the temperature, pH, hardness or conductivity range or either end of it, the aquarium size, or the maximum size of a male or a female. It shows whatever the profile says, so when that figure is corrected your text changes with it. It is only on species profiles, and a figure the profile doesn't record yet can't be inserted.

± Measurement is for any other length, temperature or volume, such as a spawning temperature or the tank length for a group. Choose the unit, and readers see the figure in metric or imperial to match their own setting. A pH or hardness that isn't one of the profile's figures can be typed as ordinary text.

The writing toolbar. ⌗ Field and ± Measurement are next to the Species link button.
⌗ Field inserts one of the profile's own figures. ± Measurement is for any other figure.

After you send

A moderator decides each change on its own, and you get one email once all of them are decided. A change is declined when there is no way to check it, or when the source does not say what you have said it does. Where something is only missing, the moderator sends it back and tells you what, and you can change it and send it again. If a moderator edits a change before accepting it, the email shows what you sent beside what was published.

If you want to change or remove something you have sent, ask a moderator on Discord.
