The species once placed here are now in Oreochromis, after Ford et al. (2019) found that Alcolapia falls within that genus.

Where the name comes fromEdit
etymology not explained, but appears to be a combination of the Latin alcali, meaning 'alkali', in reference to genus members' habitat preferences, and -lapia, since it was originally proposed as a subgenus of Tilapia.
