Where the name comes fromEdit
from the Latin anomalos, meaning 'abnormal, irregular', in reference to the unusual preopercular-mandibular lateral-line canal, which lacks a passage through the anguloarticular bone, and chromis, meaning 'a marine fish' (possibly the Shi Drum, Umbrina cirrosa) and often used in the naming of African cichlid genera following the description of Chromis (currently Oreochromis) mossambicus Peters, 1852.
