The red-tailed brycon, Brycon cephalus, is a large characid from the upper Amazon basin in Peru, Bolivia and Brazil, known in Brazil as the matrinxã. It migrates twice a year over large distances between nutrient-poor tributaries and silt-laden white water rivers, where it spawns. B. rubricauda and B. orbignyanus resemble it closely. An active, pelagic shoaling fish with sharp teeth, it grows to 220 mm SL and needs a very large, well-covered tank as it jumps.
