The wimpel piranha, Catoprion mento, is a scale-eating fish from Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Brazil and Bolivia. Though not a true piranha, it resembles them and is quite closely related to Pygocentrus species. The common name comes from the German 'Wimpel' (banner), after the extensions to the leading dorsal-fin rays in mature fish. Adults are best housed alone, and it is sensitive to poor water quality and to swings in chemistry.
