The ropefish, Erpetoichthys calabaricus, is a nocturnal polypterid from shallow, heavily vegetated waters in Western Africa. The only member of its genus, it is closely related to Polypterus, and its divided swim bladder serves as an accessory breathing organ, so it can drown if denied atmospheric air. It grows to 90 cm and will eat tankmates it can fit in its mouth.
