The violet goby, Gobioides broussonnetii, is an estuarine goby from the southern USA, Central America, the Caribbean and northeastern South America. Also sold as the dragon or Peruvian goby, it grows very large (to 62.5 cm), has specialised feeding requirements and needs brackish water, as it does not survive for long in freshwater. The smaller, riverine G. peruanus is often imported under its name and is told apart by its smaller adult size and thicker, more purple body.
