Where the name comes from

from the Ancient Greek γυμνός (gymno-), meaning 'naked', and θώραξ (thoraks), meaning 'breastplate, corslet'.

This species is not a true freshwater fish and should be maintained in brackish conditions.

Widespread through coastal regions of the Indo-West Pacific, from eastern India to the Philippines and south to Australia. It was described from the Ganges estuaries near Calcutta.
