The rusty cichlid, Iodotropheus sprengerae, is a dwarf mbuna endemic to Lake Malawi, around the islands of Boadzulu, Chinyankwazi and Chinyamwezi. One of the least aggressive and smallest mbuna in the hobby, it is easily outcompeted by bigger species and can be kept in smaller tanks. It is sometimes confused with certain populations of Labidochromis vellicans, and as a polygamous maternal mouthbrooder is easily bred.
