The zebra acara, Ivanacara adoketa, is a cichlid from Brazil that appears to be endemic to the middle and upper rio Negro system. It inhabits dark, shaded rainforest streams where the water is stained brown with humic acids and the pH can be as low as 3.0 or 4.0. Rare in the hobby, it is a bi-parental substrate spawner that uses a cave if available, and its eggs develop only in water of little-to-no detectable hardness.
