This species was formerly classified as Pseudotropheus callainos and Metriaclima callainos and is still named as one of these by many sources. It has also been seen for sale as Pseudotropheus zebra "pearly". The genus name Maylandia is now used to describe all former members of the 'zebra' group of Pseudotropheus. Endemic to Lake Malawi, where it inhabits the rocky zones around shores, reefs and islands at varying depths. One of the more aggressive mbuna and not a fish for a general community aquarium. Keep it in a Malawi tank at around three females to each male.
