Nanochromis

Nanochromis nudiceps is a dwarf cichlid from the Cuvette Centrale region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Rarely imported, it is easily confused with N. parilus, but males lack the barring in the upper caudal fin and have dark-edged body scales, and females have a spotted lower caudal. It needs very soft, acidic water, will not spawn above pH 6.5 and is not recommended for beginners.

Nanochromis parilus is a dwarf cichlid from the Democratic Republic of Congo, found in slow-moving areas of streams. One of the commoner Nanochromis in the hobby, it is easily confused with N. nudiceps, but males show barring in the upper half of the caudal fin and females have an unpatterned lower caudal. A bi-parental cave spawner, it needs soft, acidic water and is best kept in pairs.

Nanochromis transvestitus is a dwarf cichlid known only from Lake Mai-Ndombe, a blackwater lake in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The name refers to the female being the more colourful fish, with a red flush to the belly. It lives in rocky areas of the lake, needs very soft, acidic water, will not usually spawn much above pH 6.0 and is not recommended for beginners.
