Abbreviation of the word 'affinis', meaning related but not identical to. Used in the fields of systematics and taxonomy when referring to undescribed specimens or populations that resemble, but are clearly different to, a described species.

Abbreviation of the word 'confer', meaning 'compare with'. Used in the fields of systematics and taxonomy to denote specimens or populations that resemble a described taxon but differ in some respects and thus may or may not represent a distinct species.

cotype

Series of ordered or groupings or rankings within a defined system. Taxonomy is a form of hierarchy as are the ranked social groupings typical of certain fish species. The latter form of social hierarchy is also known as a pecking order.

Branch of taxonomy concerned with the application of scientific names to taxa, based on a particular classification scheme and in accordance with agreed international rules and conventions.
revision
In taxonomy, a paper or study concerned with changes, amendments or corrections to a particular taxonomic group.
species
Taxonomic rank into which a genus is divided, but otherwise difficult to delineate precisely with a single definition satisfying all eventualities still lacking to date. There exist a number of concepts of which the most popular in vertebrate taxonomy include the biological species concept and phylogenetic species concept.
systematics
Branch of biology concerned with classification and nomenclature of organisms, and the relationships between them; taxonomy.
taxonomic
Of or relating to taxonomy.
toponym
In taxonomy, a scientific name derived from a place, region, or other locality.
tribe
In taxonomy, the group ranking below subfamily with a name typically ending in '-ini'.
