name-bearing type

In zoological nomenclature, the biological type (normally either a genus, species, or specimen) that determines how a name is applied.

The single specimen designated as the name-bearing type of a nominal species or subspecies.
lectotype
In zoological nomenclature, a syntype specimen selected as the name-bearing type of a nominal taxon in the absence of a designated holotype.
neotype
A single specimen designated as the name-bearing type of a species subsequent to its description, most often when the holotype, lectotype, and syntype no longer exist.
nominal taxon
A nomenclatural concept denoted by an available name used in an original description, and based, actually or potentially, upon its name-bearing type but having no defined taxonomic boundaries. Often used when the precise definition of a species or genus is unclear, such as when a name may refer to more than one taxon and is therefore in need of clarification.
nominotypical taxon
Nominal, subordinate taxon within a family, genus, or species group that contains the name-bearing type taxon within that group that has been divided.
objective synonym
Each of two or more synonyms referring to nominal taxa with the same name-bearing type, or, in the cases of family-group and genus-group taxa, referring to nominal taxa with name-bearing types whose own names are themselves objectively synonymous.
subjective synonym
Any of two or more taxonomic names whose synonymy is a matter of individual opinion, i.e., they are based on multiple name-bearing types.
syntype
Any specimen within a type series if no holotype or lectotype has been designated, the syntypes collectively representing the name-bearing type.
type series
Series of specimens which either constitutes the name-bearing type of a nominal species or subspecies, or from which the name-bearing type has been or may be designated
zoological nomenclature
Taxonomic system of scientific names for zoological taxa and the provisions for the formation, treatment, and use of those names. See ICZN.
