zoological nomenclature

Taxonomic system of scientific names for zoological taxa and the provisions for the formation, treatment, and use of those names. See ICZN.

The two part name of a species used in zoological nomenclature comprising generic (for the genus) and specific (for the species) names which form the full scientific name when combined, e.g. Carassius auratus.
excluded name
A name unavailable for purposes of zoological nomenclature under provision of the ICZN code or because of a disclaimer.
ICZN
Abbreviation for The International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature, the organisation responsible for producing and regulating the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature.
incertae sedis
In zoological nomenclature, of uncertain taxonomic position.
International Code of Zoological Nomenclature
Set of fixed rules for the naming of animals and the resolution of problems in zoological nomenclature.
invalid
In zoological nomenclature, of an available name or nomenclatural act that is not valid under the ICZN code.
invalid name
In zoological nomenclature, any available name for a taxon other than the valid name.
junior homonym
In zoological nomenclature, the more recently-established homonym if two or more exist.
junior synonym
In zoological nomenclature, the more recently-established synonym if two or more exist.
lectotype
In zoological nomenclature, a syntype specimen selected as the name-bearing type of a nominal taxon in the absence of a designated holotype.
name-bearing type
In zoological nomenclature, the biological type (normally either a genus, species, or specimen) that determines how a name is applied.
new combination
In zoological nomenclature, the first combination of a generic and previously-published specific name.
paralectotype
In zoological nomenclature, any remaining member of a former syntype series following designation of a lectotype.
paratype
In zoological nomenclature, a specimen other than the holotype upon which a description is based, i.e., each specimen of a type series other than the holotype.
patronym
In zoological nomenclature, a taxonomic name derived from the name of a person.
replacement name
In zoological nomenclature, an available name used to replace an older available name.
scientific name
Formal binomial or trinomial name of a species used in zoological nomenclature.
synonym
In zoological nomenclature, any of two or more names of the same taxonomic rank used to denote the same taxon. Names referred to as synonyms are not usually valid in the current sense.
taxonomic
Of or relating to taxonomy.
vernacular name
Local; common; colloquial name of an animal or plant taxon. The name of a taxon in any language other than that of zoological nomenclature.
