The freshwater toadfish, Allenbatrachus grunniens, is a euryhaline toadfish from the Ganges delta in India and Bangladesh east to the Philippines. It is relatively common in the hobby and, contrary to popular belief, not venomous, but its dorsal and opercular spines can pierce the skin, so it needs netting with extreme caution. It rarely does well when kept in freshwater for prolonged periods.

Thalassophryne amazonica is a freshwater toadfish from Amazon tributaries in Ecuador, Peru and Brazil. The only freshwater member of its genus, it spends most of its time buried in sand and is an obligate piscivore that needs a constant supply of live fish. Like other Thalassophryne, it is venomous, with hollow spines on each opercle and the dorsal fin, though its venom is not known to be very potent.
